On October 2, 1881, in New Haven Connecticut, a small group of Catholic men, led by Father Michael McGivney, established the first council of the Knights of Columbus. Within the first decade of St. John the Baptist existence, 52 men met and formed the local council. The international council has grown to over 1.6 million members and the local council numbers in excess of 200. Several current members are descendants of the charter members.

Knights
The council was first formed to render financial aid and other assistance to members and their families. Throughout the years, the council has become a strong presence in the community and while they have never lost sight of their original goals, they have several areas in which their spirit of giving shines. Click Here for more information on the national organization.

The council hosts an annual cash give away and the proceeds from this fun event go to support such programs a s Birthright, Catholic Social Services, and ProLife. Much of the money raised stays in the local community as they help support summer ball programs, sponsor youth on trips, donate Bibles to the 6th grade each year, help sponsor seminarians, and make donations to those who are in need. They also sponsor a Tootsie Roll Drive each year to benefit the mentally handicapped and promote youth activities by sponsoring the annual Free Throw Contest.
